Post 5: Shifting attentions

Mr. Wickham has shifted his attention from Elizabeth to another girl. Who is this other girl? (145,148). Why does he show this sudden interest in her? How do you feel about Wickham now?

Oh my goodness! This is where I got really suspicious of Mr. Wickham. At first I thought maybe he wasn't such a bad guy and that Darcy was a little off his rocker but now I don't think so. I think that Wickham is a weasle. There is something going on with him. He is now chasing after Miss. King because her grandfather died and Miss. King is now the mistress of his estate. I think Wickham may be a gold digger. I do not trust Wickham and Elizabeth souldn't either.

I got confused when I read about Miss King at first. I thought I had skipped a page or something and missed it. But reading further helped me to realize that Wickham was done with Elizabeth and moved on to Miss King. At a rather fortunate time, I might add. "But he paid her not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's death made her mistress of this fortune"(148). Is Mr. Wickham a gold-digger? Maybe what he told Elizabeth about his and Mr. Darcy's falling out wasn't quite true. I think something is going on or happened that Mr. Wickham isn't letting on.

OMG! At first i was confused. Where did this Miss King come from? I dont remember her being mentioned before in the novel. But as i read on i realized that Mr. Wickam seemed to have tired of the Bennet family just in time to notice the new heiress in town. "But he paid her not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's death made her mistress of this fortune" (148). Does Mr. Wickam value money over affection? The actions of Mr.Wickam that we have read so far give no indication that he was just out for money. I think there is something we don't know yet about Mr.Wickam's true nature.

Mr. Wickham's attentions have suddenly shifted from Elizabeth to Miss King. "But he paid her not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's death made her mistress of this fortune" (148). The only reason Wickham has had a change of heart is because of this girl's recent wealth, so it is evident now that even if he did indeed have any feelings for Elizabeth that it didn't matter overall and that his only interest is fortune and gaining status.

As Kierstynn stated, Wickham is definitely out for the money and I have also lost trust with his character when it comes to the issue with Mr. Darcy and himself.

Wickham has shifted his attention from Elizabeth to a girl by the name of Miss King, who has recently inherited a large sum of money because of her grandfather's death. According to Mrs Gardiner, "he paid her not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's daeth made her mistress of this fortune" (Austen 148) and I am rather disappointed in Wickam because of this. I think it is very unfair of Wickham to play Miss King in such a way, when she might really fall in love with him while he is just trying to get her money, "making love to a girl whom he [does] not not care about..." (Austen 148). Elizabeth, against her character, stands up for Wickham in this section, but I am agaisnt her beliefs. He has no right to make love to a girl he doesn't care whether she is rich or poor.

Miss King is the new object of Mr. Wickham's affections. Does Mr. Wickham love her? No. Does he love her money? Yes. It just so happens that the "sudden acquisition of ten thousand pounds was the most remarkable charm of the young lady to whom he was now rendering himself agreeable"(145). But even Elizabeth, scorned by Wickham, has nothing negative to say of this new love interest. According to Elizabeth, Miss King is a "very good kind of girl"(148).

So, it cannot be blamed on this girl that Mr. Wickham has, like a vulture, swooped in on her fortune. She must of course be quite silly to let herself be wrangled in by Mr. Wickham. But I feel like Mr. Wickham has played a dirty trick in doing so. If it weren't for Miss King's new money, he would have nothing to do with her. In my opinion, he is selfish and inconsiderate. Sure, he may be in "distressed circumstances" that require him to find a wealthy woman. But to focus on Miss King so soon after her grandfather's death just isn't right.

Kaitlyn - how does she stick up for Wickham? Why do you say she acts against her character here?

Wickham has shifted his attentions to a girl by the name of Miss King who had recently acquired ten thousand pounds..."The sudden acquisition of ten thousand pounds was the most remarkable charm of the young lady to whom he was now rendering himself agreeable..."(Austem 145) Mrs. Gardiner also says it herself,"But he (Wickham) paid her not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's death made her mistress of his fortune (148)." The only reason that I can think of is that he drawn to her because she recently inherited money from her grandfather who passed away. I believe him to be more fake that Elizabeth realizes. Something about him is just off...

Ever since I was told not to like Mr. Wickam I always wondered why and have from then on anaylzed ever sceen he was in. So when this came up I was not surprised. Mr. Wickam is a, as others put it, a gold-digger. He really is. All he wants is money. He doesn't really care for Miss King. He just wants her money. Seriously why else would he be interested in Elizabeth then suddenly switch to this girl who he never paid attention to before, if it wasn't for the newly aquired fortune she inherited from her newly dead grandfather. All in all my thoughts on Mr. Wickam are he is a greedy, selfish, backstabbing, no good gold-digger.

Mr. Wickham suddenly shows interest in Miss King because he learned that she will be inheriting ten thousand pounds giving her all the more charm in his eyes. It's very clear that Wickham is a gold digger. He's only interested in girls with money or who will be getting money. He uses his charm to reel them in, and then sits back as the money rain down. Which then makes it very hard for me tor trust him with Darcy, so as of now, I am on Darcy's side.

During this reading Mr. Wickman made me so angry. I could not believe that his interest was altered so easily. He decides that his affection for Elizabeth is nothing compared to money. How can a person do this, it seems similar to the Bingley sisters if you ask me, but thats besides the point. He had no interest in her at all until "her grandfather's death made her mistress of this fortune". However, Miss King is a fool to think he is actually interested in her. My view of Mr. Wickman has changed. I did not think that he was a admirable person but he was decent, his character is outrageous now.

For some unknown reason I've always believed Mr. Darcy, but I've been trying to maintain an open opinion of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham. However, Mr. Wickham's true colors are shining, and I know have reason to trust what Darcy said over what Wickham said, mainly because the disagreement between Darcy and Wickham had to do with money.

Maybe Mr. Darcy's problem with Mr. Wickam has to do with his character, no one likes a gold-digger right?

Elisabeth,
At first I was sort of confused about the whole Miss King thing and how she came into the story, but after reading a little more and understanding the whole situation, it made me really dislike Mr. Wickham. What made me even more mad was the reason that Wickham is only showing any interest in Miss King. "He paid her not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's death made her mistress of this fortune"(Austen 148). This quote proves that all Wickham cares about is money and his own greediness. I was very suspicious of Wickham since the beginning, and this certainly did not make me think any better of him

So now I'm starting to think Mr.Wickham is merely interested in marriage for the financial aspect. Elizabeth couldn't have said it better by asking her aunt, "Where does discretion end, and avarice begin?"(148) Wickham is only interested in Miss King for her newly claimed fortune after her grandfather's death. I wonder what's going through Miss King's head. Does she think Mr.Wickham loves her? Hopefully she would be smart enough to figure out that he's only in it for the fortune, but as Elizabeth said, "He shall be mercenary, and she shall be follish."(148)

In these few pages Mr. Wickham has shifted his attention from Elizabeth to Miss King. This would have been alright if Mr. Wickham was not a gold digger. When Elizabeth is describing Miss. King to her aunt she goes on to tell us that Mr. Wickham, "paid her [Miss. King] not the smallest attention, till her grandfather's death made her the mistress of this fortune"(Austen 148). Eilizabeth wasn't good enough for him because she didn't have money. I didn't like Mr. Wickham to begin with, but this just put the cherry on top of my hatred sundae. Also, his sudden attatchment to Miss King for her money leads me to believe even more that there were other he is leaving out in his side of the Mr. Darcy nonsense.

This really made me dislike Mr. Wickham, more than i already had. Miss King is his new love interest but only after "The sudden acquisition of ten thousand pounds"(145), was placed in her control. Mr. Wickham is so shallow and such a jerk. He has no feelings for Miss King, only for her money. I understand that he is going through hard times, but to love a young Lady for her money is terrible. What a selfish man to begin a love interest with a woman who has money just so he can gain that money one day and hopefully call it his own. When Miss Kings grandfather dies and makes her "mistress of all this fortune"(148), she becomes something Mr. Wickham is not interested in. What a Pig!!

Mrs. Matysak - Elizabeth sticks up for Wickham by stating that, "A man in distressed circumstances has not time for all those elegant decorums which other people may observe. If she does not object to it, why should we?" (148) and the fact that she thinks it is perfectly fine that he is pretending to like Miss King when, "The sudden acquisition of ten thousand pounds was the most remarkable charm of the young lady to whom he was now rendering himself agreeable" (145).Elizabeth doesn't find a single fault in Wickham only wanting King for her money when, if it had been Mr. Collins doing this to Charlotte, she would have. Plain and simple Elizabeth acts out of character because she is infatuated with Wickham and believes he can do no injustice. ~ Kaitlyn Betz

Good point Kaitlyn! She is completly blind to what her friends are saying because she is so infutuated with Mr. Wickam that she completely ignores her RELIABLE friends and people.

It's hard to agree with a specific person for this topic because almost everyone has mentioned a fact that I have come to agree with. Specifically, the fact that Wickham is a gold digger. Everyone has picked good points over the topic and Wickham's attitude.

I agree with Amy's perspective. I never actually trusted Mr. Whickam to begin with. Mr. Darcy appears in brighter lights in this context.
